30/30 Challenge - Day 4

I had a break at work today, so decided to go for a walk at Garry Point Park in Steveston.

In one corner, they have made a memorial garden to honour all the Japanese people that made Steveston home during the fishing boom of the last century.

Another memorial in the park, is the Fisherman's Memorial to honour souls that were lost at sea. The needle on top of the memorial is a replica of the needles used to make fishing nets. My Mothers Father was a lobster fisherman and her job was to repair the nets with these needles. I still have a box of them that I inherited from her.

Doesn't it look like this salmon is crying, kind of a statement about the condition of our oceans!

Wherever I go in nature, man is always trying to create space.

This guy is getting dragged around the park by his kite while he rides a long board, looks like fun!

...and then it started to rain. I went back to the car to try and wait it out, but after 45 minutes I had to go back to work. Note to self, put an umbrella in the car!

    1. We really are blessed out here, Vancouver is one of the highest rated cities for living ( sadly this is reflected in the extremely high cost of living ). But once you get over the sticker shock, the mountains, ocean, forests and mild temperatures make it worth while. Where do you live?

    2. Currently I'm living in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. We've been here for 15 years. April 6, my husband took a job in Minnesota, so when our house sells, I will be moving too. We both grew up in Minnesota, but haven't lived there for 35 years. I would love to find a house on a lake, your pictures make me wishful. Chances are good, as MN has thousands.

    3. I used to know a lot of people with cottages at the lake and every time I went to one, I would wonder why they didn't live there full time. If your willing to commute a bit for work ( I drive one hour each way to get to my job) and you are ok with more physical labour like chopping wood for the stove etc. then I would look to rent or buy a cottage and live your dream. Life is short! Make it happen by not accepting anything less. That's how I got this place, just started acting like it was a done deal before I ever saw this place. Good luck, can't wait to see the pictures!

  2. I love that park. I used to go there every time I visited Steveston. It was my favourite getaway spot when I was taking care of Mom in Bellingham. Now I don't get to go there much any more. - Margy
